1981 VOLKSWAGEN RABBIT PICKUP TRUCK 1.9 DIESEL - Restored to almost like-new condition. This is the deluxe version, or LX Model, which is a little more luxuriously appointed, and has a few more creature comforts than the base model vehicle, such as better cabin insulation and sound-deadening, 5-speed manual overdrive transmission, dual remote external rear-view mirrors etc.
This vehicle has undergone a large amount of repairs and upgrades performed by us within the last 1000 miles, which are as follows:
Stock 1.6 Liter Diesel engine replaced by a fresh zero-mile, modern factory VW/Audi 1.9 Liter Turbo-Diesel (TD) engine installed in a Normally Aspirated (NA) configuration. This includes all NEW Injectors, Glow-Plugs, Gaskets and Seals, Timing Belt/Tensioner, etc.

Stock seats upgraded to nice 1990 Jetta Grey Velour deluxe seats w/headrests.

NEW Bulbs/fuses as needed.
****NOTE**** MOST of the parts used in this restoration are genuine VW/Audi items, many of them are OEM, NOS. So, most of you know that genuine parts do NOT come cheap. We use only the best stuff out there, and it all comes at a price! There are no generic Pep Boys/Kragen/Auto Zone parts used with the exception of maybe a nut or bolt or something extremely minor. So, if you want something nice, this is it!
This is an un-molested, solid California vehicle, so has NO rust issues. The body is fairly nice and straight, the doors shut nice and tight, the bed is almost flawless, with the exception of as couple of small dings normal for the age of the vehicle, the tail-gate is straight and shuts nice, the dashboard is in good shape with the exception of one very small crack normal for its age, not very noticeable and can be easily covered with a dashmat, the carpeting is new, door panels are in very decent shape with the exception of a small crack in the passenger side one, again not really noticeable, considering this truck is 30 years old! The seats are comfortable to sit on. All lights, instruments and horn work well. The new AM/FM/CD Player makes fairly nice sounds. The new 1.9 liter Diesel engine is smooth and quiet, partly due to its hydraulic lifters which never need adjusting, and much more powerful and torquey than the old stock 1.6 Diesel engine it replaced, and even though it is NOT broken in yet, having less than 200 miles on it since being installed, allows this truck to cruise the Interstate comfortably at 75 MPH in 5th gear all day long without even breaking a sweat! It goes up most hills without having to down-shift and is absolutely a pleasure to drive.
****NOTE**** This Caddy is equipped with Dealer-installed AC, it is all there with the exception of the compressor and mounting bracket.
This Caddy steers straight, the 5-speed manual overdrive transmission shifts smoothly, accelerates and stops well, and goes over bumps nice and quiet. Overall, this is a very nice vehicle, and, with proper maintenance and regular oil changes should last forever. These Rabbit Diesels are famous for longevity, reliability, and practicality, and at barely 106K miles on the chassis this one has a lot of life left in it. The body of this Caddy was stripped down, including the engine compartment, and re-painted the stock factory Black color, the headliner and cab padding and lining was old and sagging, this was all removed and replaced by NEW Grey velour fabric along with NEW padding. Almost everything on this vehicle which in our opinion needed repair or replacement has been discarded and replaced with NEW OEM parts. That includes all the items listed above and maybe a few more items which we might have over-looked. This truck represents excellent value for your money. It looks sharp and runs great, and turns heads everywhere! NOT to mention that Diesel engines get great fuel mileage, at an average between 40-45 MPG, and, if you install a Bio-Diesel or WVO kit, you could be running this fine truck for next to nothing!
